The Recovery Model & The Hero's Journey

Caedmon offers so much more than typical arts-based learning.
Our flagship programme The Hero's Journey is rooted in the core principles of The Recovery Model of mental illness.

The Hero’s Journey is a storytelling structure found in everything from Star Wars and
The Lord of the Rings to Matilda, Moana, and countless video games ...
A protagonist is called to adventure, faces challenges, forms allies, and discovers
strength they didn’t know they had.
The Recovery Model can be applied in the same way. A young person may feel defined by their struggles or trauma. But with the right support — mentors, community, and a safe place to explore positive identity and creative expression — they are ready to begin their journey of growth and transformation.
They explore who they are beyond their difficulties, reclaim their voice, and realise they are the hero of their own story.
And it's a story worth telling ...

The recovery model provides specific mental health support, while emphasising the child or young person's individual capacities for the best and most sustainable recovery possible.
Every aspect of the child or young person’s emotional, social, physical and spiritual wellbeing is factored into helping them to help themselves recover.
Recovery itself is seen as a journey...

Recovery is rooted in:
Our flagship programme draws on the key factors of the Recovery Model, and on the structure of the Hero's Journey storytelling structure from which it takes its name.
It is an arts-based learning programme that uses the arts of storytelling, performance and beyond, to help improve the wellbeing and empowerment of children and young people who are considered vulnerable in education and community settings.
Our Heroes learn new personal and interpersonal skills in a safe, playful environment - where imagination is everything! Our expert mentors help them to validate their voice and experiences by designing and producing their own original creative project - in whatever medium the Hero feels called to explore. The programme culminates in an exciting sharing session on their local stage ... even if that's in the West End!
They leave us with tools that will not only improve their quality of life, but help them to be once again the Hero of their journey as it continues
from the classroom to the stage, and beyond...
